The challenge
Rising costs, changing demand and constrained investment capacity were putting increasing pressure on the hospital’s financial sustainability.
A private hospital was seeking to strengthen its financial performance while continuing to deliver high-quality care and respond to changing patterns of demand. Rising costs were outpacing revenue growth, while the lingering financial impacts of COVID-19 continued to affect overall performance. At the same time, constrained capital investment was limiting opportunities for growth and fluctuating demand was driving inconsistent utilisation of facilities and services.
To navigate these challenges and position the organisation for future success, the hospital needed a clear understanding of the financial and operational factors influencing performance. Identifying where improvements could be made would be critical to addressing immediate pressures while establishing a foundation for long-term sustainability.
How we helped
A rapid, evidence-led review combined operational analysis, financial modelling and frontline engagement to identify the changes that would have the greatest impact.
OCM partnered with the hospital to rapidly diagnose performance challenges and identify opportunities to improve both financial and operational outcomes. Drawing on our deep sector experience, practical expertise and best-practice approaches, we worked closely with clinical leaders and staff to develop a comprehensive understanding of current performance and the underlying drivers of inefficiency. Bringing fresh perspectives and innovative thinking, we combined operational analysis, stakeholder engagement and financial modelling to establish a clear evidence base to inform future decision-making and identify opportunities across areas such as theatre utilisation, cost reduction, asset optimisation and sustainable growth.
Building on these insights, OCM worked collaboratively with stakeholders to develop a balanced set of initiatives that combined immediate improvement opportunities with longer-term strategic investments. Alongside identifying practical actions, we helped align leadership around a clear vision for the future and supported the adoption of new ways of working. This included strengthening decision-making, clarifying priorities, improving communication and building the capability required to sustain performance improvements over time.
Results that matter
A prioritised improvement program gave the hospital a credible pathway to stronger performance and long-term financial sustainability.
The hospital received a clear and practical roadmap that brought together improvement opportunities across service delivery, operations, corporate services, workforce and financial performance. This enabled leaders to focus resources on the initiatives most likely to deliver meaningful and sustainable results.
The work supported a more deliberate approach to the hospital’s mix of services and activity, aligning these more closely with demand and organisational capability. It also provided a structured way to address cost drivers, improve utilisation, support revenue growth and reduce the unit cost of service delivery.
Combined with the hospital’s other strategic initiatives, the recommendations established a credible pathway towards a more sustainable operating model, supported by clearer strategic focus, stronger organisational alignment and improved performance. Following implementation, the hospital reported an operating profit for the first time in several years.
